Godalming is a historic market town with one of the richest concentrations of listed buildings in Surrey — timber-framed and Georgian frontages, and a great deal of fine period housing in the villages around it. It’s exactly the kind of decorating I enjoy most.
Decorating in Godalming
Much of the town’s housing is genuinely old, and it shows in the detail: lime-plastered walls that move, panelled shutters, deep skirtings and original joinery. Nearby Busbridge and Farncombe add handsome Victorian and Arts & Crafts houses. All of it asks for careful preparation and paints chosen to suit the surface rather than fight it.
Older Godalming homes reward a decorator who takes the preparation seriously — making good years of movement, filling and sanding properly, and choosing breathable finishes on period plaster. I work by hand throughout, which gives the closer, more characterful finish these houses deserve.
