Alfold sits right on the Surrey and West Sussex border, a scattered village of old cottages, farmhouses and barn conversions between Cranleigh and Loxwood. Sidney Wood and the remains of the Wey & Arun Canal give it a quiet, deeply rural feel. I decorate across the village and out to Alfold Crossways.
Decorating in Alfold
This was glassmaking country centuries ago, and the housing reflects a long, slow history: brick-and-tile cottages, timber framing, low ceilings and thick, uneven walls, alongside converted barns with tall volumes and a great deal of exposed joinery. Old and converted buildings both reward patient preparation and finishes chosen to suit the surface.
Barn conversions and old cottages sit at opposite ends of the same problem — large, awkward surfaces that show every shortcut. I take the preparation seriously in both, then finish by hand so the result has depth rather than a flat, sprayed sameness.
Alfold work divides neatly between tight old cottages and tall barn conversions, and the two need opposite things: sympathy and breathability in one, patience with large flat surfaces in the other.
