Bramley runs along a single handsome high street between Guildford and Cranleigh, following the line of the old Horsham railway — now the Downs Link path. It is a village of Victorian and Edwardian houses, older cottages and substantial homes tucked into the lanes towards Thorncombe Street. I decorate throughout the village and the countryside around it.
Decorating in Bramley
The high street holds a good run of late-Victorian and Edwardian housing — bay fronts, sash windows and generous proportions — while Gosden Common, Snowdenham and Birtley add older cottages and larger houses in their own grounds. It is the kind of mixed period stock that wants proper making good before anything else: sashes eased and prepared, old plaster repaired rather than papered over.
Bramley sits close enough to Guildford to expect a town standard of finish, but it is very much a village — which means working quietly, parking considerately on a narrow high street, and leaving the place as I found it. Everything is cut in by hand and tidied down at the end of each day.
A lot of Bramley’s high-street houses have original sash windows that have been painted shut over the years — easing, preparing and finishing those properly is often the single change that transforms a room.
